Volunteer Now
Looking for a place to put your faith into action? Below are some opportunities where you may place your time and skills. Office Volunteer Receptionists Our church office is open 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9:00 a.m. to noon on Friday. Volunteers staff the reception desk in morning or afternoon shifts, answering the phone, giving basic information on events, performing simple clerical tasks (ie. stuffing envelopes), and help people who come into the office for food bag distribution. If you have computer skills you'd like to share, there are a variety of data entry tasks. All these tasks are opportunities to practice hospitality. For more information, to volunteer (weekly, occasionally or as a substitute) email Lorrae Emory, our Office Manager.
Tuesday Crew Our buildings are not only used by internal Wesley groups, but heavily used by a variety of community organizations. That means there are always small repair and clean-up tasks to tackle that help keep our buildings usable for ministry. Tuesday Crew gathers on Tuesday mornings from 8:00 to about Noon to work on these projects. While this group has mostly been retired men, anyone with time and willing hands is welcome. If you have some handy-skills, all the better! Just show up on Tuesday morning in your work-clothes. If you have some skills like plumbing, carpentry or electrical experience you'd be willing to share as needed, email Lorrae Emory to let her know.
Sound/Video Tech on Sundays Sound and video projection for our 8:30 and 11:00 a.m. service are run from a booth in the back of the sanctuary. Basic computer (PC) skills are needed, but we do the training when you volunteer. Sound/video techs are sometimes also needed for weddings, memorial services and other events. For more information or to volunteer, email Vickie Healy, who coordinates tech volunteers. Worship Services In addition to sound & video, volunteers help in a variety of ways with our worship services, including greeting at the door, ushering, and reading scripture or prayers. If you are interested in any of these opportunities to volunteer for Sunday morning worship services, email Pastor Vickie Healy. If you are interested in helping in some way with Wesley Celebration (our Sunday evening LGBTQI service), email Ryan Rickert. To donate flowers for Sunday morning worship, email Lorrae Emory.
Food Not Bombs Help to feed the homeless and hungry. Food Not Bombs is an affiliated organization with Wesley. FNB (which includes some Wesley members) uses our church kitchen every Saturday morning to prepare large quantities of food that are transported to Roeding Park to feed the homeless and hungry. Some help is needed in preparation and clean-up, but the most help is needed in serving the food at the park. You can just show up at Roeding Park to serve (be prepared to pay the $3 park entrance fee) at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday. This group also collects coats, gloves, socks and other clothes, as well as sleeping bags/blankets to give away. For more information contact Kellyborkert@hotmail.com.
Sunday School Teachers Our Sunday School teachers work on two member teams to prepare weekly lessons from easy-to-use curriculum. We usually have three classes: pre-school, early elementary, or older elementary children. Teaching Sunday School is a great opportunity to learn Bible stories and excite children in learning about God and being in relationships within the community of faith. Substitutes are also needed. To protect both the children and the adults who work with them, our congregation has a Safe Sanctuary Policy, which requires background checks. For more information, contact Pastor Vickie Healy.
Many Other Possibilities Are you good with money and budgets? Love to work with children? Can't wait to organize an event? If you have a skill you'd be willing to share, just let us know! We'll brainstorm with you about where it might fit in our current ministries. It may be that you have a great idea for a new ministry--Base Camp and Wesley Celebration are both recent examples of ordinary people who saw a need, and figured out how to join together with a few others to try to address it. If you have skills to share or an idea for a new ministry, contact Pastor Vickie Healy.
Base Camp Each Thursday evening starting at 5:30 p.m., we gather for a community meal which includes our neighbors. A simple, nutritious meal is prepared and served for between 70 and 100 people, both Wesley members and neighbors. Those who can afford to, make a small contribution, those who can't eat free. To be good stewards of our earth, we use our ceramic plates and cups and silverware, all of which must be washed by hand after dinner. Meal preparations and set-up begin around 2:00 p.m. on Thursdays. Clean-up is usually finished by 7:30 p.m. All of this is coordinated & planned by Josie Vasquez our "Chef d'jour". If you can help with meal preparations or clean-up email Josie Vazquez for more info. |
